(KPLC) - Housing, infrastructure, and businesses are all things that can contribute to a city’s growth. Last year, several of our surrounding areas saw a significant amount of development, and more is expected in the coming year. In 2024 alone, with public and private investments, over $600 million worth of projects were underway in the City of Lake Charles, according to Mayor Nic Hunter. Some of that was infrastructure, but most of it was housing. “It has been decades since we have seen this much development spread throughout the entire city, and by the way that figure I mentioned is before we even talk about the new I-10 bridge, and probably another $200 million of infrastructure projects set to happen over the next couple years,” Hunter said.Hunter said 2025 will see the completion of many housing investments in the city.“In early 2025, we will be able to say for the City of Lake Charles, we will have more rental units inside the city than we had pre-Hurricane Laura,” Hunter said.Port Wonder, the children’s museum and science nature center on the lakefront, is expected to open in 2025, and the new Crying Eagle restaurant is expected to be completed mid-year.Housing projects underway in the City of Lake Charles include Calcasieu Heights, Capstone at the Oaks, and Woodring. Most recently, the city announced a new lakefront hotel and event center amphitheater expected in the coming years.Over in Sulphur, there are some major development projects expected to kick off in 2025 which will have a huge impact on the city. Among these is the LNG project developing south of the city. “We’re kind of unique in the fact that even though it doesn’t take place within the city limits, we see the residuals of that. we see a lot of buildout in other things, whether it be in housing stock, whether it being retaining retail shopping or restaurants, and things of that nature,” Sulphur Mayor Mike Danahay said.A 24-hour restaurant and development at the golf course are just a few of the projects in Westlake in 2024.Westlake Mayor Hal McMillin said in 2025, they will continue to work to improve the quality of life for residents.“I could tell you we’re cleaning up Westlake. We’re getting to see more and more old, dilapidated homes, that have been here for a long time that need to be torn down, we’re tearing down homes,” McMillin said. McMillin said the growth for Westlake is going to be tremendous.“We’re going to get a new I-10 bridge, that’s coming up, and an overpass over those railroad tracks, so the only negative they have, ‘Oh we’ve got to wait on trains,’ that’s all going to go away, and when that’s happening, when that happens, Westlake will be a major exit off the interstate,” McMillin said.</div></body>
