(WSAZ) - The beginning of the 2023 school year at Scott Teays Elementary started with a life-threatening scare.Gryffin Cavender was in the third grade when he had 2 AEDs used on him.On Friday, he rang the air horn to start the racers for a 5K with the goal to bring awareness to the need of having AEDs in schools.“It’s just important to know if there isn’t an AED and something happens, they could die or something,” Cavender said. He’s going into the fourth grade now and helping to make sure every school has an AED.His mom, Leigh Cavender, said “...and thank everybody that is a part of raising the money for such a great cause. The school that he goes to actually had an AED in place that was donated by this foundation, so we were fortunate for that.”The foundation hosting the 5K and 1 mile glow run is the Maura Rae Kuhl AED foundation, created after the untimely death of Maura Rae Kuhl.Jess Kuhl was Maura’s father. He said she died 3 days after she was born from an unknown heart condition. He said both of his sons were later found to be at risk with the same heart condition.Putnam County Schools didn’t have AEDs in them at the time; and they carried one with them everywhere they went in precaution. They donated one to the school. The foundation started fundraising and raising awareness to try and get AEDs in every school, leading to the 13th annual 5K in Winfield.“You know Winfield is a really tight-knit community, when we lost Maura, the community really mourned with us, and when we started this, the community really supported it. So, we have people who show up tonight and never ever thought about doing a 5K before we started doing ours,” Kuhl said. The community coming together to enjoy free food and entertainment, while racers take on the course to bring awareness to AEDs in schools.</div></body>
