Mom Catches 'Sweet and Quiet' Rescue Pit Bull's Epic Tantrum Over Sitting on the Couch and it's Perfect

Shelters do whatever they can to get their dogs adopted. They want to make them seem as adoptable as possible, which can sometimes be hard, especially if they're living at the shelter and not a foster home. Shelters tend to freak dogs out, and an on-edge dog might seem a little less "friendly."

One Pit Bull's main selling point was that he's a very quiet, gentle boy. He was labelled as a follower, and someone that you could bring home if you wanted an easy companion. On Saturday, August 3rd, his mom posted to show everyone that this was not the case:

Cheerio the Pittie is a bait and switch master. He should sell cars if being a couch potato doesn't pan out!

Cheerio was rescued on when he was just a puppy. His mom and eight of his littermates had been dumped, and the shelter got to them just in time. Since that day three years ago, he's grown into a fine young dog. He's incredibly strong-willed and hard-headed, but he's also very loyal.

However, when he was first adopted, his mom was told that he was very shy and easygoing. He probably was behaving that way when she went to get him from the shelter, but upon coming home, he was like a totally different dog. Luckily for him, she still loves him anyway, even if it does mean sharing their favorite spot on the couch.

What is the 'Honeymoon Period' in Dogs?

Whether you're getting a dog from a shelter or bringing them home from a breeder, you should know about the honeymoon period. It will happen to you, even if you don't think it will.

The "honeymoon period" occurs within the first 2-4 weeks after bringing a dog home. They're still settling in, getting their bearings, and feeling anxious, so they may seem a bit withdrawn or shy. They'll be quieter and more willing to "listen," usually because they want to avoid angering you. After the honeymoon period is over, you'll start to see more of your dog's real personality.

For rescues in particular, this period can be rough, despite the name making it sound sweet. Many shelter dogs are re-surrendered within the first month of being home because of it; they're so shy that their new family thinks they hate it there. The best thing you can do is stick it out and continue to try and befriend them, even a little at a time. They will warm up eventually, and they might even boss you around just like Cheerio does to his mom!
