Florida's alligator hunt in public waters is Aug. 15 until Nov. 1. Here are five things to know:

    • Apply early: Go to MyFWC.com for more information and to apply in May.
    • Limited entry: About 15,000 hunters apply for about 7,000 annual permits.
    • Take two: One permit allows a hunter to harvest two alligators.
    • Trophy lake: The Stick Marsh in Indian River County has the largest average alligators harvested.
    • State record: A 14 feet, 3½ inch alligator was harvested in Brevard County.
