Decline in Democrat registrations in Kentucky while Republicans, Independents surge

FRANKFORT, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — With the next election just months away, Secretary of State Michael Adams announced a surge in Kentuckians registering to vote.

Adams said 14,502 people registered to vote in July.

“Kentuckians are signing up to vote in big numbers, because they trust the integrity of our elections,” Adams said in a news release.

The voter roll was also cleaned up, with 5,675 people being removed due to death, felony convictions, duplicate registrations, and more. The net gain in voters is 8,827.

Adam’s said the presidential election is likely the cause of the surge, but said a decline in new Democratic registrations could mean a lack of excitement about the change in presidential candidate.

Republican registrants, which account for 46% of the electorate, saw the largest number of registrants, with 6,221 voters registering as Republicans, a .38% increase for Kentucky’s largest party of 1,628,029 voters.

Only 370,513 of voters are registered as Independent or under other political affiliations, making them the smallest section of Kentucky voters, with 11% of the electorate. However, “other” registration jumped by 3,784 voters, a 1.03 percent increase.

Democratic registrants continue to see a decline in Kentucky but remain a large block of registered voters. Democrats make up 43% of the electorate with 1,506,394 voters. Adams said Democratic registration dropped by 579 voters, a .04 percent decrease, in July.
