Northbound lanes on the Pennsylvania Turnpike’s Northeast Extension will be closed early Sunday morning between the Quakertown and Allentown interchanges.

Work on replacing a bridge that carries Tilghman Street over Interstate 476 in South Whitehall Township will take place between midnight and 6 a.m. This will allow steel beams to be placed. Southbound lanes will remain open, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission said.

    Following is the suggested detour:

    • Route 663 north 3.3 miles
    • Route 309 north 9.3 miles
    • Interstate 78 west 6.3 miles
    • Route 309 north 1 mile
    • Route 22 west 1 mile
    • Re-enter at Lehigh Valley Interchange.

State Police and turnpike personnel will be positioned at the impacted areas to assist drivers. Digital message signs will also provide information on the closure.
