Douglas Man Charged After Allegedly Attacking Woman with Broomstick

Officers from the Douglas Police Department recently charged a man who allegedly assaulted a woman with a broomstick, and was then stabbed by the victim.

According to a DPD incident report, on July 7, officers responded to East College Park and Pearl Avenue following a report of a stabbing.

Upon arrival, a sergeant from the department was already on scene, applying pressure to the wound of a man identified as 55-year-old Jerry Lee Manning of Douglas.

The reporting officer interviewed individuals at the scene, all of whom claimed they were not present during the altercation. When EMS arrived, Manning refused hospital transport despite being advised that his wound required stitches.

The sergeant informed officers that witnesses alleged Manning had engaged in an argument with a woman. According to the report, witnesses stated that Manning had gotten "so mad so he broke a room and attacked her, with resulted in a cut on her left forearm and then she stabbed him."

However, Manning denied attacking the woman with a broomstick.

The officer noted, "After considering the evidence at the scene and statements from Manning and the woman," Manning was arrested on one count of aggravated assault.

According to the report, upon arrival at the Coffee County Jail gate, Manning "pretended to have passed out" on the seat of the vehicle. Despite attempts to assist him out of the truck, Manning fell. He repeatedly refused to get up, forcing officers to lift him. A corporal retrieved a wheelchair, but the jail declined to admit Manning without him first being seen at the Emergency Room. Manning was then transported to Coffee Regional Medical Center for treatment of his wounds.

The report detailed that Manning received treatment for a stab wound to his left shoulder, requiring five staples. The woman was treated for a laceration on her left forearm, receiving 10 stitches.

Following treatment, Manning was taken back to the Coffee County Jail and has since been charged with aggravated assault.

Records from the Georgia Department of Corrections indicate Manning had previously served time for multiple convictions, including possession of cocaine (two counts), obstruction of a law enforcement officer, selling and distributing cocaine (six counts), and selling and distributing marijuana. He was also arrested for shoplifting in 2018, pleading guilty to the offense in 2021.

The Coffee County Jail roster shows that Manning has been released since his arrest.
