With summer in full swing, many people are busy planning vacations or quick getaways and figuring out the best way to spend time away from work or school. While some may explore destinations far from home, it turns out you don't have to go too far to see incredible sights as some of the best places to visit in the country are right here in North Carolina.

World Population Review compiled a list of the "best places to visit" around the U.S., listing out reasons why the destinations are such a big draw and worth seeing whenever you happen to be nearby. According to the site, the top spots to visit in North Carolina are the Biltmore Estate, a massive dwelling sprawling thousands of acres in Asheville, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park for the outdoor lovers and adventurers.

Here's what the site had to say:

"The Biltmore Estate in Asheville is one of the top places to see in North Carolina. The Biltmore Estate has lush gardens, a grand mansion, and a rich history for visitors to learn and explore. The mansion is the largest privately-owned house in the United States. If you're looking for more adventure, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the place to be. The park is perfect for hikers and campers, who can enjoy the mountains, greenery, and hundreds of wildlife species."
