Walgreens closing around 2,150 stores nationwide - list of closed locations

Walgreens could close around 2,150 “underperforming” stores across the US by 2027 in an effort to cut costs and improve its business model. The top executive at the pharmacy chain, which operates over 8,600 American stores, said that "changes are imminent" at the struggling company.

CEO Tim Wentworth told investors that Walgreens will examine 25 percent of its stores for closure , which works out at around 2,150 locations. He said there isn't "one exact number" number yet but that "the current pharmacy model is not sustainable".

"You don't need to have the number of stores we have today," he said on an earnings call. "Reducing capacity is not a bad thing, from a payer standpoint. We can serve payers very effectively from the footprint that remains."

He added that any impacted employees could transfer to other locations. Shares in the company plummeted after the news broke, but Walgreens is far from the only pharmacy chain struggling.

Pharmacies have been losing money on some prescription drugs that are coming down in costs, and more and more customers have been turning to online pharmacies and telehealth visits. The pandemic also didn't help as customers became "increasingly selective and price sensitive on their selections," Wentworth told The Wall Street Journal.

“We recognize where we are is a turnaround,” he said. "We recognize that we need to be focused on what are the parts of the business that we believe are contributing and have a future, and some of those need to change."

Here is a list of the stores that have been closed so far.

I spoke to a manager at my Walgreens recently and was sad to hear that these closings are due largely to the uptick in theft.....
