The Seoul government has found that products from the online shopping giant Shein , tested positive for toxic substances hundreds of times above acceptable safety levels .

The Chinese-founded platform has an estimated 88.8 million active shoppers, with 17.3 million of those based in the US. In 2023, the Shein app was the most downloaded app in the world, installed 238 million times.

Inside Retail Asia reported that Shein clothes - more specifically children’s clothing items - contained “significant quantities” of potentially dangerous chemicals, including phthalates. The items tested included children's shoes, leather bags and a belt. One pair of shoes reportedly contained “428 times the permitted levels of phthalates.”

Phthalates have been proven to cause hormone disruptions and various other health issues, including obesity, heart disease, some cancers and fertility problems.

Shein has been facing backlash in recent months, for many different practices it follows. One point of contention is the use of fast fashion production that allows them to introduce hundreds of new items every single day. Shein is responsible for 6.3 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

Shein was quick to address the concerns about toxic substances in their products. A spokesperson told AFP the retailer takes product safety “very seriously.” They also claimed that Shein conducted 400,000 chemical safety tests of products within the past year.

Singapore’s Consumer Product Safety Office has allegedly been in touch to carry out an investigation and Shein has confirmed that they are conducting their own investigations on the products that were deemed unsafe by the Seoul authorities. In the meantime, they have been removed from the site.
