Gilbert Arenas on why he'd build around Luka than SGA: "When he's not complaining, he's dominating"

Luka Doncic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are among the best players in the NBA today. They are the cornerstones of their respective franchises and would arguably be among the top young stars that any NBA GM would want to build his team around. If that GM was Gilbert Arenas , he would build around Luka rather than SGA. He explained why in a recent episode of the Gil's Arena podcast.

"For me, because he is big, 6'9", 6'10" with his shoes on, He can play the one, two, or three if need be. When he's not complaining, he's dominating. The only knock against him is he whines a little bit...So when he's not doing that, he's dominating."

Luka's game doesn't have any glaring weaknesses

Doncic is one of the tallest point guards ever in the NBA. Officially listed at 6'7" but could easily be a couple of inches taller than that, Doncic is one of the most versatile players today. He is an excellent playmaker at his size and has the complete offensive arsenal to complement his passing skills.

Like any player, Luka has his own weaknesses. But the main criticism of his game isn't part of his game, per se. It's how he often complains to the referees, which sometimes affects his level of performance. Other than that, his game doesn't have any glaring weaknesses, and he's the type of player that anybody would want to build his team around.

"He's a mismatch problem across the board," added Arenas. "No matter what you're trying to do with him, he's torturing whoever. He's proved that you can put the best guards and power forwards. You can double but I'm still torturing…So I'm gonna go with him. SGA is a different talent on his own but I'm going with the one who has more versatility."

Parsons says Luka can do what Bird did and more

Doncic's versatility has sparked comparisons to Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird. While some have opposed putting Luka's name next to Larry's, former NBA player Chandler Parsons defended the argument by saying that Doncic can do what Bird did and even more .

"Hot take - Luka's already better than Larry Bird was," said Parsons on the Run it Back podcast. " He doesn't have the resume. He doesn't have the championship. But as a basketball player, Luka Doncic can do everything Larry Bird did and more."

Whether Luka is better than Bird or not, he's certainly a more well-rounded basketball player than Gilgeous-Alexander. It's not that SGA isn't that good, but Luka's skill set is just more diverse, and he can beat you in more ways.
