Jessica Lange stopped by The View to talk about her latest Broadway show, Mother Play, and her new Great Lillian Hall show, which she is starring in alongside Kathy Bates.

But when she was describing Kathy's character, the daytime show had to censor one of Jessica's words. Jessica explained: "It's a little bit [like] the Thelma Ritter role," Lange said, comparing Bates' work to that of the legendary Hollywood actress Ritter.

She added: "She's tough-talking," before the show then censored out her next word.

The Academy Award-winning actress is nominated for a Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Play. She's already won the award in 2016 for her role in Long Day's Journey into Night.

Sara Haines described the role Jessica plays, Phyllis, as "an alcoholic single mom who by your own admission, wouldn’t win any Mother of the Year awards." This prompted Sunny Hostin to say: "You've been playing a lot of bad mothers lately."

Jessica laughed and said: “I was thinking about this. As far as careers for women in Hollywood, you start as an ingenue, then you’re a leading lady, and then you're kind of beginning the mother era of your career."

"And you’re a good mother you’re an attentive mother," she continued, "And then you move into 'bad mother' and then finally you end with dementia - that’s the last phase of your career."

She then noted that she's playing a woman with dementia in her upcoming role in The Great Lillian Hall as the titular Lillian Hall. But Sunny didn't seem to let it go.

“I can’t imagine you’re that bad at real life,” Sunny said to Jessica. The actress responded: “As an actor, you just play what’s written.”

Sunny continued: “But you’re so good at it." Sara tried to intervene, saying: “That’s why she wins awards."

Jessica took it in stride as she said: "That’s your job, make it believable, make it as truthful as you can. But no I'm not a bad mother, I just wanna say that up front."

The actress added: "I was actually raised by an absolutely wonderful mother and if I could even approximate what she did in her life as a mother I'd be very happy.”

Jessica has three children - Shura Baryshnikov, born in 1981, with Latvian ballet dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov; and Hannah Shepard, born in 1986, and Samuel Shepard, born in 1987, with playwright Sam Shepard.
