Distracted driving includes more than cell phones; KHP crash video

TOPEKA, Kan. (KOAM) Distracted Driving is not just someone talking on a cell phone as shown recently in a crash shared by the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The Kansas DMV (Dept of Motor Vehicles) reminds any activity that diverts a driver’s mind away from the task of operating a motor vehicle is dangerous. Distractions may include:

    • Adjusting the radio or climate controls
    • Interacting with other passengers, including children and pets
    • Grooming, smoking, eating or drinking
    • Reading maps
    • Visual obstructions such as the sunset or bright sunlight
    • Reading road advertisements
    • Observing a crash scene

It goes without saying cell phones are restricted use and texting is prohibited while driving in Kansas.

Recently a Motorist Assist Technician was struck by a distracted driver and it was caught on the rear camera of the state vehicle involved.

He was in the roadway with his emergency lights on, his sign board was activated, and all vehicles were properly yielding until he was struck.

Focus on the roadway, and together we can ensure all motorists make it to their destinations safely.

    There were no serious injuries.
