New sports lighting at Callaway Stadium complete

The Troup County Board of Commissioners has announced the completion of a significant lighting upgrade project at Callaway Stadium. The entire stadium and field lighting system has been replaced and upgraded.

The project included the complete removal of the original lighting system and the installation of an entirely new LED stadium and field lighting system, which will provide a brighter and more even distribution of light on the playing surface. Altogether, these upgrades include new foundations, poles, bracket mounting arms, LED light racks, and new electrical and control systems, all of which were funded by SPLOST 6.

Utilizing an LED system will be more energy efficient for Callaway Stadium than previous options, which is very important due to the significant amount of usage from the Troup County School System, LaGrange College, and Troup County Parks & Recreation. The advanced system also includes a new light show entertainment system with color options and emergency egress lighting for the stadium area

“The new light upgrade at Callaway Stadium is exciting for our community as this is the first lighting upgrade since 1958,” said Troup County District 4 Commissioner Morris Jones. The new LED lights are brighter than the previous lights, and we were able to improve the visibility on the field and around the stadium with 4 poles versus 8. Considering these lights are LED, this should help with electricity costs when events take place at the stadium.”

Commissioner Jones also explained that the new lights have the ability to change color and blink. “I know our young athletes and coaches will be excited about the new ‘light show’ feature when they compete at Callaway Stadium,” said Commissioner Jones. “I will certainly be excited to see it as well.”

The commissioners approved the project in late 2023. The contract was awarded to PSG Energy Services in Atlanta, who submitted a base bid plus a 25-year warranty upgrade in the total amount of $384,530.18.

The commissioners also approved the multicolor entertainment light show add-on at a cost of $33,684.65.

At the time, county staff recommended PSG’s bid because it provided a more consistent lighting level across the field with fewer dark spots.
