WASHINGTON COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – Like several other local counties, Washington County is trying to find ways to help people addicted to opioids.

Sheriff’s officials are using $1.3 million from the state’s opioid lawsuit settlement over the next 18 years.

The money will go to community outreach, and education, and help connect those struggling with substance abuse with the right resources.

The county has received a little more than $200,000 this year and another $90,000 next year.

“The money wasn’t there. The need was there. The money wasn’t there. So, the settlement enabled us to be able to do this. We’re moving in the right direction to hopefully make some changes in those areas,” said Washington County EMS Director Randy Truette.

In 2023, Washington County had 69 opioid overdoses and three fatalities.

So far this year, they have had 37 overdoses and zero fatalities.

Truette said they have already set up partnerships with nearby rehab facilities to help with treatment and counseling.
