Do you wonder what that nasty smell that has been cropping up all over Denver is?. I know. Denver has lots of nasty smells, including urine and feces in the alleys. There also is the unmistakable chemical smell of meth that turns some people’s stomachs. And of course, marijuana lingers in the air Denver-wide.

The Denver City Council agreed Monday to purchase Denver Community Church’s gymnasium and a vacant lot for $4 million. The properties are at 333 and 375 S. Zuni St. and the gym can hold up to 120 people. Currently only 30 migrants are sheltered there, according to Evan Dreier from the mayor’s office. He said the building, which exceeds 10,000 square feet, could serve the traditional homeless population, too.

It’s a fair question: Have people experiencing homelessness moved to Denver for a free hotel room?. At least one man did. The mother of a missing man messaged me the other day to tell me she is looking for her son. She said he moved back to Denver from Florida thinking he could get a free hotel room as part of Denver Mayor Mike Johnston’s House1000 plan. Of course, those rooms all are full now. Also, most people who received the rooms were in established encampments that the mayor swept. There never were any rooms for people who might move to Denver one week to be housed the next.

For the second year in a row, Denver has ranked high on a listing of cities with bed bug infestations. It came in 15th from among more than 400 cities analyzed for problems with the blood suckers by the website Pest Gnome. The site crunched numbers regarding population density, number of multi-unit buildings and access to exterminators. From among the more than 400 cities ranked, Denver landed at 22nd for the number of accommodations, ninth for the average monthly Google searches for bed bug-related keywords during the past year, and 131st for population density.
