The reading of poems and the planting of lilacs  helped mark Earth Day celebrations Sunday at West Hills County Park.

Organized by Suffolk Count Legislator Rebecca Sanin, D-16th, the event included a chance to explore marine life, reaching into a tank to touch creatures, a demonstration of horsemanship and show jumping at the adjacent DDR Farm.

Kids tried their hand at digging holes, planting lilac bushes and watering the plants, with adult guidance.

Long Island Cares, Island Harvest, PSEG-LI, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Starflower Experiences. folksinger Annie Mark, Elija Farm, Suffolk County Parks and Commack Public Library came out to celebrate activities at the park.
