HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Henrico County Public Schools is hosting a “Drive the Bus” event in order to connect with prospective bus drivers and give them a change to test drive a school bus.

According to the school district, interested applicants will be able to test drive a school bus and go through a course during the “hands-on career showcase.”

The event is taking place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 4 at Glen Allen High School. Interested participants are asked to sign up ahead of time by filling out this form.

Bus drivers must be at least 21 years old, have a valid Virginia driver’s license and pass a physical and drug test. They also must be able to obtain a CDL Class B instructional permit or hold a CDL Class B license with endorsements in Passenger Transportation/School Bus and airbrakes.

New bus drivers are eligible for a signing bonus of up to $3,000, which would be paid in installments, and a pay raise for bus drivers set to take effect on July 1 means that drivers will make a minimum of $25 an hour next school year.
