PIKETON — Lieutenant Governor John Husted visited the Pike County Career Technology Center Tuesday afternoon.

Husted had the opportunity to see some of the healthcare equipment that was purchased with $53,653 the CTC received from the Super RAPIDS program, as well as other programs the school offers.

According to the Ohio Department of Higher Education website, the Super RAPIDS regional program supports collaborative projects among qualifying institutions to strengthen education and training opportunities that maximize workforce development efforts in defined areas of the state. These funds shall be used to invest in strategic initiatives that build capacity, remove employment and training barriers for prospective and unemployed workers, develop and strengthen business-led strategies in the impacted industries, and provide local guided solutions to employment for communities in economic transition. Super RAPIDS will connect with businesses to ensure awards address a need for a specific skill or credential in a local community that will be addressed through up-to-date equipment or a specific program to help train students and workers. This partnership is mandatory and one of the strengths of the Super RAPIDS initiative and a cornerstone of ODHE’s existing RAPIDS program.

Superintendent Eric Meredith thanked the Lt. Governor for the money the school received from the program and was introduced to instructors and students enrolled in several programs.

Husted was very interested, while talking to the CTC Placement Coordinator Mike Carter, about the placement rate at which the students are employed after graduating from the school.

Carter said that more than 90% of the students that go through the CTC’s programs are employed, have joined the military or attend college after graduation. Carter also explained that many of the students that are in programs at the school, right now, have employment in something related to their field of study.

Husted received a guided by Meredith of several labs including medical technology, building maintenance, welding carpentry and others. Husted spoke to students in each lab asking them what they would like to do after graduation.

One student in particular impressed Husted with her ambition to open her own business. Husted encouraged the student telling her, “It won’t happen overnight, but keep working It will happen.”

Husted also toured the New Generation Café. The Café is operated by the students enrolled in the Culinary Arts Program. This is a training facility for the students. Meals are “made to order” so if you do not have sufficient time, you may not want to order from the menu. A daily buffet is provided for those in a “hurry.” The Café’s normal operating hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 10:30a.m. ‐ 12:15 p.m. and is open to the public. As the Café is an educational facility, there are times that it must alter our operating hours without notice.

Another extra treat Husted got was to visit the student-ran credit union, which is a branch of Atomic Credit Union.

Husted is in his second term as Lt. Governor under Governor Mike DeWine. The next gubernatorial election in Ohio will be in November of 2026.
