It’s been a few weeks since the 2023-24 season ended for the St. Louis Blues. They finished 43-33-6 with 92 points, which was six points short of a playoff spot. There were some great moments this season and a few players who played well, but there were also disappointing parts of the season that contributed to missing the playoffs. The season has finally come to an end for the New York Islanders. To the surprise of not many, the team was eliminated in the first round by the Carolina Hurricanes. Throughout the regular season, the Islanders were streaky. This includes a six-game winning streak followed by a six-game losing streak. Ultimately, the blue and orange got hot at the right time of the year to squeak into the playoffs thanks to winning eight of their last nine and inept competition from Eastern Conference playoff contenders.

Goaltending is a fickle beast. It has always been considered one of the hardest positions in sports to evaluate because it’s a mental game that no one can quite fully comprehend. What goes on between the ears of an NHL goaltender will always be a mystery to those who follow the game. Teams can live and die by the player who guards the blue paint as the Detroit Red Wings found out during the 2023-24 season. Ville Husso, James Reimer and Alex Lyon were all part of the active roster during this past season, but it’s safe to say the story didn’t play out the way Detroit general manager Steve Yzerman had planned. An upgrade is most definitely needed in Motown. But at what cost?
