COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – An adult and a juvenile were injured after their vehicle went airborne in what emergency crews called a high-speed crash Friday afternoon.

Colleton County Fire-Rescue said the crash happened shortly before 4:30 p.m. along Green Pond Highway. It’s not clear how fast the car was traveling.

A northbound Nissan Altima crossed into a southbound ditch, struck a driveway culvert, and went airborne. It then hit a large pine tree about 15 feet off the ground before falling into the ditch behind a guardrail.

Fire-Rescue officials said the adult female driver was trapped in the wreckage. A 15-year-old female passenger suffered traumatic injuries but was able to get out of the vehicle on her own.

Deputies from the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office arrived soon after and began helping the two.

“Firefighter-Paramedics arrived a short time later and used Holmatro Rescue Tools to extricate the driver,” officials said.

The driver and passenger were taken to the Medical University of South Carolina’s (MUSC) trauma center for treatment.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
