POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — April’s Pink Moon will appear Tuesday evening, with rangers at Powhatan State Park hosting a bonfire and walk under the moonlight to mark the occasion.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac , the moon will not actually appear pink, since the name instead refers the blooms of some pink wildflowers during April. The moon will, however, be full during the Pink Moon.

From 8 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, rangers at Powhatan State Park will host a bonfire with plenty of marshmallows to roast for s’mores at the River Bend Campground within the park.

After enjoying treats around the warm glow of the fire, attendees can then take a short walk led by a ranger or volunteer beneath the moon’s glow.

Guests are asked to bring a headlamp with a red setting or a flashlight covered with red cloth of cellophane so as to preserve the group’s night vision and to avoid disturbing nocturnal animals.
