Former NBA All-Star resigns from HBCU coaching job

Kenny Anderson, a dynamic point guard during his days at Georgia Tech and in the NBA, has resigned from his head coaching job at Fisk University , an HBCU in Tennessee. Anderson announced his decision on Friday and shared it with the world via social media.

“I will enjoy my life, but I will miss everyone at @fiskuniversity ,I have been here for 5 years, and i truly love it,My daughter graduated from here ! I don ‘t know what else to say !!!,” Anderson wrote on X.

Fisk was 33-79 in six seasons under Anderson. The Bulldogs went 14-16 overall, 10-8 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference this past season. That was the best record during the Anderson era.

“We appreciate (Anderson’s) contributions to the Fisk University men’s basketball team and wish him well in his future pursuits,” first-year Fisk athletic director Valencia Jordan said in a prepared statement.

The 53 year old Anderson played a total of 15 years in the NBA after being drafted second overall by the New Jersey Nets in 1991. He was an NBA All-Star with the Nets in 1994. Over the course of his career he ultimately played for nine different teams in the NBA. He began coaching HBCU basketball in 2018 when he accepted the job at Fisk.

During the time of Anderson’s hire there was a flux of former NBA players taking jobs at HBCU programs. Darrell Walker, Juan Dixon and George Lynch signaled some of the high profile hires.

At Georgia Tech he was a famed member of “Lethal Weapon 3” featuring himself, Dennis Scott and Brian Oliver.

Jordan said Fisk will conduct a nationwide search for a new coach.

“We are committed to finding a leader who will build upon the program’s foundation and achieve continued success on and off the court,” she said.
