Florence County 11-year-old killed after shotgun went off ‘for unknown reasons,’ report says

FLORENCE COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — An 11-year-old boy who was killed in Florence County Wednesday evening was shot in the stomach by a shotgun that went off “for unknown reasons,” according to a Florence County Sheriff’s Office report.

Brentlee Crump died in the shooting, which happened at about 8 p.m. Wednesday on Clover Hill Road in the Scranton area. Florence 3 Schools said Crump was in fifth grade and attended Scranton Elementary’s STEAM Academy.

When deputies responded to the home, Crump was already taken by EMS to McLeod Hospital where he later died, according to the report. They spoke with a man who said he was standing beside the house when he fired his shotgun into a nearby tree.

The man said he had the gun in his hands near his side when the gun went off again “for unknown reasons” and hit Crump in the stomach, the report said. The man ran up to Crump and called for help while trying to stop the bleeding.

Deputies also spoke with a woman who told them she was inside the house when she heard a pop-like sound, but she did not think it was a gunshot, the report said. She then heard it again, which is when the other children came in screaming. The woman said she performed CPR on Crump after calling 911.

No arrests have been made in the investigation, which is still ongoing.
