(WDBJ) - If you think you can’t find a steakhouse-quality steak way out in the country, inside a gas station, we have some good news for you. We’re getting farmhouse boujee at Sago’s in this week’s Hometown Eats!“We offer anywhere from gas to steaks, so you can’t go wrong there,” said Sago’s employee Debbie Adkins.“It’s a little bit country and a little bit fancy,” joked regular customer Faye Carter.Deep in the tall grass of Franklin County you’ll find this white building at the intersection of Truevine and Snow Creek Roads where, in fact, some of the best food comes from a kitchen attached to a gas station. Welcome to Sago’s!“I’ve lived in this community for years and we just needed a place to eat and sort of get together and pick at each other, so here we are,” said Sago’s owner David Smith.Smith tuned what was a cow pasture, not that long ago, into a farmhouse of sorts that welcomes strangers and regulars with warm smiles.“My husband tells people come try it and if you don’t like it, he’ll pay for their bill,” said Carter. The Smith family managed a construction company in Penhook, so they know a thing or two about how to build on a solid foundation, and one look in this open kitchen and you’ll realize this ain’t your mama’s stove top.“I do the grill mainly here, so I like making the Drunken Ribeye a lot. I like making a lot of the wagyu products that we bring in,” said grill master Raymond Jax.Yes, you heard grill master Raymond Jax clearly, Sago’s is slinging Wagyu-style beef, something executive chef John Hanek takes great pride in.“This is our American Wagyu from a local rancher here in Penhook, VA. As you can see, the marbling on that is superb. We sell these as a special, the NY Strip steaks and we also have the Drunken Ribeye,” explained executive chef John Hanek.“It’s a ribeye steak that our chef has put his own sauce on it, and you have to taste it to believe it,” added Adkins. “That’s what makes this place unique, the fact that it’s not just a hot dog and hamburger place.”But if you’re in the mood for a classic cheeseburger, they have you covered at Sago’s. I need to back up, I kind of took a shot at mama earlier, so to redeem that, I will say, they still have what you’d find in her kitchen like fried chicken, either pressure cooker or regular deep frier, which is how chef built the Pickle Barrel sandwich. And what would a country kitchen be without a country favorite, meatloaf, made with the Wagyu and a touch of oatmeal. It’s a staple in this joint.“Awesome meatloaf. I had to decide between that and the fried chicken because they’re great,” said Carter.Don’t forget about the pizza you get on the convenience store side, it also comes fresh from the oven.“There’s nothing like this, basically out in the middle of nowhere. When you come in you kind of feel at home and get a very good meal,” said Adkins.“I left out of here when I was 14 or 15 years old and traveled and went and did culinary in California and food trucking all over and worked for hotels and stuff. It’s just good to be back home,” said Jax.And David said people are already asking for another Sago’s!“We got the surrounding communities wanting us to come to their community to build another one but that’s here and far away,” joked Smith.Sago’s, a hometown eat in the middle of nowhere, that’s arguably better than anywhere.Sago’s Convenience Store is located at 3927 Truevine Rd, Penhook, VA. It’s open Monday through Friday 5:30am to 9pm, Saturday 6:30am to 9pm, and Sunday 6:30am to 8pm. The restaurant is open Monday 7am to 8pm, closed Tuesdays, Wednesday through Sunday 7am to 8pm.</div></body>
