JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WKBN) – Work began Monday to replace a 114-year-old bridge in Mercer County.

A $1.9 million project to replace the bridge that carries Valley Road (Route 3039) over Lackawannock Creek in Jefferson Township began Monday.

A concrete beam bridge will replace the existing steel one, and work will also be done on the roadway.

The work should be done by October 2024.

A detour in place will take drivers to Route 258, Route 58 and Grove Road. It is expected to be in place for approximately four months.

The existing bridge was built in 1910 and is rated in poor condition. Approximately 500 vehicles use the bridge daily, on average.

This project is funded in part by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL).
