What is Hypochlorous Acid?

This hospital-grade disinfectant is more effective than chlorine bleach in fighting harmful bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Our white blood cells naturally produce it to combat infections in the body. Despite its strength, it has a neutral pH, making it safe for skin care products and wound treatment and even effective for reducing bacteria levels on eyelids and eyelashes. It is considered safe for long-term daily use and has been rated between levels one and three in terms of safety by the EWG when used in cosmetic products.

This disinfectant has been credited with reducing contamination on cruise lines from norovirus outbreaks and effectively combating pathogens like hepatitis A, salmonella, and strep. Grocery stores use it to keep fresh produce free from germs because of its ability to kill potentially deadly pathogens while maintaining a high level of safety. Although no one would like to consider consuming even more chemicals, the efficacy of this one may help prevent a much more severe illness from occurring.

Rather than using a more harmful chemical to keep produce clean, grocery stores like Sprouts have thankfully chosen this more natural option. Although it may not sound appealing, it's important to remember that even our drinking water is treated with chlorine bleach. It would be interesting to learn if this could actually be a safer alternative for that, too.
