Perth Zoo's Tree Kangaroo Joey Was Born in February
On February 2, 3034, Perth Zoo shared the happy news that they had welcomed a new Tree Kangaroo joey.
"Perth Zoo is jumping with joy to announce the birth of an endangered Goodfellow’s Tree Kangaroo!" the zoo shared in a press release.
"The female joey was born about the size of a jellybean last spring to mum Kaluli and dad Huli and has been busy growing and developing inside her mum’s pouch."
This baby is one of many born at this zoo , but they're equally excited to watch another one grow up, and she's the first female joey.
“She is the fifth joey born here at Perth Zoo, and her arrival is a major milestone for the globally coordinated conservation program for Goodfellow’s Tree Kangaroos,"Perth Zoo Australian Fauna Keeper, Holly Lewin said, according to the zoo's press release.
“She still has quite a bit of growing left to do in mum’s pouch. But over the next few weeks, lucky visitors may be able to catch a glimpse of her face or even a foot poking out."
The International Union for Conservation of Nature ( IUCN ) lists the Goodfellow's Tree Kangaroo as "endangered" due to the continued decline in population.
The IUCN says the designation is "based on an ongoing population decline of at least 50% over the past three generations (i.e., 30 years) due to actual levels of exploitation from hunting and a decline in habitat quality. It has already been extirpated from significant portions of its range."
We're so happy to hear the Perth Zoo is having great success in increasing the population, and we're excited to hear what her name will be!
