Like humans, every animal on the planet leads a life of their own. The same can be said for all of our pets—some are carefree and casual, and others dedicate their lives to things like work and caring for others.

One dedicated K9 in the video below served 9 years as a police dog and recently retired, leaving behind an impressive resume (and a few tears from his human). His final sign-off was nothing short of emotional, and really makes you remember just how important these hard-working pups are. Grab the tissues!

How cool is it that they make an announcement like this? I know dogs don't necessarily understand human language, but I'd like to imagine Indy understood that they were praising him right then and there. At the same time, no one works harder and more selflessly than a dog, so I'm sure it was just another day for this heroic pup.

It's obvious that this officer and his partner pup Indy had a serious bond. I also have to assume this is like parting ways with any partner on the squad. After spending nearly a decade together fighting crime, working hand in paw, breaking a routine like that would not be easy for anyone. But the good news is, Indy is still going home with him and the retired life might be exactly what this doggo needs.

What Happens to K9s When They Retire?

The life of a police dog looks a little different than the typical laid-back, leisurely life of most pups. I'm not here to compare one way or another, either, but it simply does.

These pups spend a big chunk of their life training, serving and protecting, and in all honesty, most seem to absolutely love it. It's a lifestyle that comes with challenges and rewards, hard times and great times, frightful moments and lots of praise and treats.

But what happens when the hourglass runs out and it's finally time for them to retire ?

More often than not, retired K9s end up spending the rest of their life with the officer they served with. They become house pets and get to experience the same carefree days that most pets consider normal.

Long days on the couch, casual walks with the family. Life tends to slow down a bit for them.

The fact that most of them get to stay with the human they've worked with for (usually) all their lives makes absolute sense to me. In fact, it would seem somewhat traumatic to have it any other way (although it does happen).

But I truly can't even imagine the bond these officers and their K9 companions share. Chances are they've seen some things , if you know what I'm saying, and to experience the things police officers generally experience would certainly cement that relationship pretty quickly.

While work might not look the same for this officer moving forward, at least he knows Indy will be waiting for him at home every day, eager to hear all about the bad guys dad busted. I like to imagine Indy saying, "Ahhh! I should've been there!" Yes, you should've, bud.

This was a touching send off either way, and I have nothing but respect for all the hard-working pups out there. Congrats on your retirement, Indy! Go take a nap. You deserve it.
