CCSO: Man attempts to stab a victim, later claims it was pepper spray

BROWNSVILLE, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) — A man allegedly attempted to stab a victim while discussing money that was owed, authorities say.

Cristobal De La Cruz, 37, was charged with aggravated robbery, according to a release from the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office.

On Sunday, deputies responded to a disturbance at a residence at the 6300 block of Tecate Drive.

At the scene, deputies spoke with a 36-year-old victim, who reported a man, later identified as De La Cruz, arrived at his home to discuss money that was owed.

The victim reported to deputies, that De La Cruz reached for his necklace and said he would hold it until he was paid. The victim then pushed De La Cruz away, at which point De La Cruz pulled out a knife and lunged at him in a stabbing motion, the release stated.

According to deputies, a family member pushed the victim out of the way to prevent from him getting stabbed. De La Cruz fled the scene and was later found by deputies at Chilton Street.

De La Cruz told investigators he went to the victim’s home to discuss the money that was owed to him and the victim’s necklace.

He added he did not have a knife but a pepper spray, according to Cameron County deputies.

De La Cruz was booked into Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center, where he is pending arraignment.
