A Devil May Cry Anime Is In The Works From Netflix

By Philip Watson,

During the recently announced Netflix Drop 01 Anime Showcase event, Netflix surprised audiences with a glimpse of the new Devil May Cry anime they have in the works.

It has been a long time since the original anime for the Madhouse-produced Devil May Cry series was released way back in 2007 on the Japanese WOWOW TV network, and was well received by fans, garnering an 86% user score on Metacritic . Netflix has announced today at their Drop 01 Anime Showcase event Dante is coming back in all of his zany glory in a new animated Netflix Original series, adapted straight from the games themselves. The incredibly brief teaser can be seen below.

While the Drop 01 event played host to Castlevania: Nocturne , Adi Shankar — who helmed the previous well-received Netflix adaptation of Castlevania — is present as showrunner and Studio Mir will be handling the animation duties. Adi Shankar said, “I’m honoured that Netflix and Capcom have entrusted me to shepherd the Devil May Cry franchise. Alex Larsen and I love these characters, we are part of the fandom, and vow to surpass the exceptionally high bar we set for ourselves,” in a statement regarding the new series.

Devil May Cry has been a rollercoaster of a franchise, seeing a full, more edgy reboot from Ninja Theory in 2013 after Devil May Cry 4 boldly chose to feature a new playable protagonist aside from the fun-loving pizza-eating half-devil. To fan excitement, this production is made by fans of video games, and judging from the brief sound snippets, the new show could be right on brand with what fans can expect from the series’ traditional campy approach and metal soundtrack.

Although the anime announcement was made way back in 2018, this is the first time it has been actualized on a screen with a plan set in place. Seeing as how Adi Shankar and Studio Mir is behind the adaptation, fans can let out a sigh of relief as Adi Shankar’s latest Castlevania adaptation was incredibly well received by critics and fans alike so the adaptation should be in good hands. Fans can swing over to the Netflix Tudum site for more information on their upcoming anime series, or the official Netflix Youtube to watch the entire Drop 01 showcase.
