Pirola Covid symptoms to watch out for as new strain identified in the US

By Ciaran Bradley,

A new strain of Covid-19 has been detected in the US and the public is being asked to look out for the symptoms. BA.2.86 - known as Pirola - was detected on US shores initially in Michigan. Pirola was first detected in Denmark on July 24 and was also found in that country on July 31, the same day it was discovered in Israel.

The first case in the US was also detected earlier this month. As yet, there is no sign that the Pirola strain is any more harmful than those which have been detected previously - although it is thought it might be more contagious.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) said that they are tracking the new strain. "CDC is tracking a new lineage of the virus that causes COVID-19," the center wrote on social media. "CDC is gathering more information and will share more about this lineage as we learn it."
