Influencer with terminal cancer, 36, tells two young kids she’s going to die: ‘Sick to my stomach’

YouTube star Jenny Appleford has never smoked — but the California mom-of-two has terminal lung cancer.

Two weeks ago, the 36-year-old was told she had less than a year to live — and she knew she had to break the news to her children.

“We understand science, we understand higher power,” Kyle Appleford, Jenny’s spouse, said in a YouTube video announcing the heartbreaking news.

While they aren’t “giving up” just yet — after all, “miracles happen,” said Jenny — they are also “realistic” after doctors gave the family a timeline of just six to nine months.

“We’ve known from the minute we got this diagnosis that lung cancer is an absolute beast of a cancer,” Kyle continued.

The couple share son, Ellis, seven, and daughter Winnie, three, and sat the children down to tell them the heartbreaking news.

Jenny and Kyle released a video, titled “We Told The Kids I’m Dying,” which detailed their offsprings’ reaction.

“We talked about how the cancer is getting bigger and stronger, finding more places to go and hide to where we can’t get it and they both started breaking down instantly,” Kyle stated, adding that the conversation made him “sick to my stomach.”

“We told them that the doctor told us about six to nine months. Ellis was very much clinging onto this idea that there could be a miracle.”

The seven-year-old purportedly told his parents that he was hoping he was “having a bad dream.”

“‘It takes a lot of courage to be honest with them because it’s a scary thing to say but this is the route we took and I’m glad we did it,” Kyle said, defending he and Jenny’s parenting decision.

Jenny was diagnosed with inoperable stage 3 non-small cell adenocarcinoma in March of 2021 at just 33 years old after experiencing rib pain and shortness of breath.

Despite undergoing chemotherapy, procedures and various medication treatments, the cancer eventually metastasized to her brain and some of her lymph nodes last year, progressing to stage 4, which has an estimated five-year survival rate of 9% .

Since Jenny’s diagnosis, she and her husband Kyle have taken to YouTube to vlog her cancer journey and share updates with the channel’s 105,000 subscribers.

The family has set up a GoFundMe page , where they have raised more than $122,000 in an attempt to alleviate the cost of cancer treatments and alternative therapies.

After last month’s “bombshell” news, they are in the business of buying Jenny more time.

Jenny’s next steps involve receiving proton therapy , a type of radiation, which Kyle described as “putting a Band-Aid on a gaping wound.”

“It can help, but it can’t do everything that it needs to do to stop this cancer from continuing to grow,” he said.

The couple revealed one of their biggest fears could come true — that the cancer in Jenny’s brain could result in loss of motor function or even memories. Kyle admitted that his wife “doesn’t want to be alive if it means she’s not here mentally.”

“Jenny has said that if we ever hit this point, if we ever get this news, that she has one rule,” Kyle said. “And that’s for her to be surrounded by family and positivity.”

Now, the couple is experiencing the first of many lasts — starting with their supposedly “last wedding anniversary,” they revealed in their most recent YouTube video.

“Every day is a gift, you guys,” Jenny said into the camera when breaking the news of her prognosis. “Cherish your time with your loved ones.”
