Bill named after slain Dutchess County woman one step closer to becoming law
A bill named after a slain Dutchess County woman is one step closer to becoming a law.
Melanie's Law, named after Melanie Chianese, passed in the Senate Wednesday.
The 29-year-old was killed in 2019 by her mother's ex-boyfriend who is now serving a life sentence for her murder.
Chianese's mom had a restraining order, but Melanie allegedly didn't.

The bill in her name would allow judges to grant protective orders for adult family members of domestic violence victims.
Melsnie's Law has bi-partisan support but it's unclear if the Assembly will vote on it before the end of session this month.
