ALL RIGHT, ELI, THANK YOU. 608 NOW TODAY, NEW ORLEANS LEADERS WORE ORANGE ON THE STEPS OF CITY HALL TO CALL ATTENTION TO THE IMPACTS OF GUN VIOLENCE AND TO HONOR THE FAMILIES OF THE VICTIMS. THIS COMES HOURS AFTER THREE PEOPLE WERE SHOT HERE IN THE CITY OVERNIGHT, INCLUDING A WOMAN WHO WAS KILLED IN THE BROADMOOR NEIGHBORHOOD. WDSU REPORTER SHAY O’CONNOR NOW LIVE WITH WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR ABOUT THIS SITUATION. SHAY, GINA, NOPD ARRESTED 34 YEAR OLD LOST IN ALLEY LAST NIGHT FOR SHOOTING AND KILLING A WOMAN HERE AT THIS YELLOW HOME LAST NIGHT. THIS IS HERE AT THE INTERSECT OF GENERAL TAYLOR IN SOUTH RUSSIA, BLADE STREET. NOW, TAKE A LOOK AT THIS MUG SHOT OF LEE. I’M TOLD HE AND THE VICTIM WERE IN A RELATIONSHIP. AT LEAST ONE NEIGHBOR I SPOKE WITH IN THIS AREA SAYS SHE HEARD GUNFIRE AND LOUD SCREAMS. OTHERS TELL ME THEY HEARD ABSOLUTELY NOTHING AND WERE SHOCKED TO SEE SO MANY INVESTIGATORS ON SCENE LAST NIGHT WHEN IT HAPPENED. LEE IS BEING CHARGED WITH SECOND DEGREE MURDER AT THIS TIME. NEIGHBORS SAY THEY ARE STUNNED BY THE PERCEIVED GROWING VIOLENCE TOWARDS WOMEN HERE LOCALLY SINCE JANUARY. ANALYSTS SAY AT LEAST A DOZEN WOMEN HAVE BEEN MURDERED. I DIDN’T EXPECT THAT. IT’S A SHOCKING THE STEPS THAT WE ARE TAKING AND NEED TO TAKE TO ADDRESS INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE ARE CRITICAL TO UNDERSTANDING ANY INCREASE IN FEMALE HOMICIDE. THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT, THE CITY HAS ALSO EXPANDED RESOURCES AND DIRECT SERVICES FOR OUR INTIMATE FOR OUR SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. AND YOU ACTUALLY JUST HEARD FROM DR. JENNIFER AVEENO WITH NEW ORLEANS HEALTH DEPARTMENT. SHE AND OTHER CITY LEADERS WERE ACTUALLY OVER AT CITY HALL EARLIER TODAY TO JUST PAY ATTENTION OR TO PAY AWARENESS TO GUN VIOLENCE AWARENESS AWARENESS MONTH. Friday, New Orleans leaders wore orange on the steps of city hall to call attention to the impacts of gun violence and honor the families of victims. This comes just hours after three people were shot in the city overnight, including a woman killed in Broadmoor.The New Orleans Police Department arrested 34-year-old Lostin Lee for shooting and killing a 34-year-old woman at the intersection of General Taylor and South Rocheblave Street. Neighbors said Lee and the victim were in a relationship. At least one neighbor said she heard gunfire and loud screams; others said they heard absolutely nothing. And were shocked to see so many investigators on the scene last night when it happened. Lee is being charged with second-degree murder. Neighbors said they were stunned by the growing amount of perceived violence among women. Since January, analysts say at least a dozen women have been murdered. Meanwhile, members from the New Orleans Health Department, along with doctors with UMC and other activists, gathered and shared resources as they work to fight back against gun violence. They also announced the expansion of trauma recovery services this summer at UMC for those dealing with the mental impacts of gun violence.
