This week marked the 134th anniversary of the 1889 Johnstown Flood, as more than two thousand people lost their lives when the South Fork Dam broke, sending an enormous wave of water and debris toward the city of Johnstown.
On Wednesday, the victims of the great Johnstown Flood of 1889 were commemorated with events throughout the day.
At the Johnstown Flood National Memorial, a wreath was laid at 4:07 p.m. on the remains of the dam. That's the time the flood waters hit the city of Johnstown.
Also at the memorial, 2,209 luminaries were lit to honor the victims of the flood. Each luminary has the name of a victim written on it.
Students from Forest Hills School District helped make the luminaries.
“It's very somber to see all the bags on the dam; it's very moving when you see all those bags glowing and you think about each bag representing someone that died that day in the flood.”
