Grapewood Farm goes against the conventional farming grain

It’s a busy morning at Grapewood Farm off Nomini Creek in Westmoreland County. The family farm specializes in growing organic grains—sungold spelt, danko rye and liberty soft red winter wheat.

As their slogan “Virginia Grown, Virginia Ground” highlights, they also operate their own mill that creates high quality flours that bakers, pastry chefs, pasta makers and home bakers in the mid-Atlantic region have grown to appreciate.

The team of Fred and Cathy Sachs, along with son, David, each have specific roles today in the large barn that headquarters most of the processing operations. David is cleaning and packaging spelt berries (seeds). Fred is running the mill and Cathy is managing the office/testing lab. Another son, Peter, also is involved in the farm though not on site. While they have different roles today, they excitedly share their story and the bigger picture—regenerative organic farming.

Fred got the idea of the farm in 2000 as something to do after retiring from….
