June is Pride month, dedicated to the LGBTQ+ community in honor of the Stonewall riots — a series of gay liberation protests in 1969 to resist police harassment.

While St. Pete Pride, which holds a series of events all month leading into one of the nation’s largest pride parades, is the largest function, other places in the Tampa Bay area will mark the occasion with festivals and honorifics this month.

It was in June of 1969 that patrons and drag performers at the Stonewall Inn in New York City staged an uprising to resist the police harassment and persecution to which LGBTQ+ Americans were commonly subjected. This uprising marked the beginning of a movement to outlaw discriminatory laws and practices.

With June upon us, here are some of the top local Pride events to consider:

June 8-14

Hot Box: Local artist Chad Mize curates his sixth Pride-themed art show at his new St. Petersburg venue, Space. The 18-and-up show features artwork by locals including John Gascot, Lucky Leroy and Finn Schult. Friday’s opening reception includes drag performances, DJ tunes and a bar. A literary element includes poetry readings throughout the weekend. Youth Pride and Family Day: This is will be the third year for this St. Pete Pride family event that has drawn families and allies to North and South Straub Park for family-focused activities, vendors, a youth lounge and main-stage performances. Get Nude: Drippin’ in Melanin: The Tampa Bay Black Lesbians Group will dance the evening away while meeting, mingling and celebrating the Black and brown women of the Tampa Bay LGBTQ+ community. The attire for the evening is “nudes and earth tones” to celebrate every shade of the rainbow. Music by DJ Donnie Luv. $15. 9 p.m. Saturday (June 10). Shades of Pride Festival: This Juneteenth celebration highlights the impact of Black and brown culture on the LGBTQ+ community. Free. 5 p.m.-3 a.m. Saturday (June 17). The Factory St. Pete, 2622 Fairfield Ave. S, St. Petersburg.

Stonewall Reception: Acknowledge those who have made LGBTQ+ Pride possible at this reception with appetizers, drinks and entertainment. $75. 6-9 p.m. Wednesday (June 21). The James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art, 150 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. 727-892-4200

June 22-28

Friday Night Concert: Tony Award winner Idina Menzel is the headliner for this 18-and-older night at Jannus Live with local drag favorites Brianna Summers and Ashlee T. Bangkx. Also, Miss St. Pete Pride Ceazia Giovanni Kreshé, Mr. St Pete Pride Vyn Suazion and Mx. St. Pete Pride KaMarion Lavish. The teen band from Girls Rock Camp St. Pete called Anarkitty, as well as Queen Sheba Bethsheba A. Rem, will open. Hosted by Angelique Young-Cavalier. RuPaul’s Drag Race: The live version of the popular competition television show is only for adults 18 and older. The show features performers Asia O’Hara, Bosco, DeJa Skye, Jujubee, Lady Camden, Laganja, Vanessa Vanjie Mateo and select finalists from Season 15 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” The lineup is subject to change. Pride Shabbat: Two Jewish congregations are partnering to create Pinellas County’s Pride Shabbat, June 23-24, with worship services, a cocktail reception, lunch, and participation in the downtown St. Pete Pride Parade. On Friday (June 23) at 6 p.m., rabbis and musicians from both Temple Beth-El and Congregation B’nai Israel of St. Petersburg will lead sabbath prayer services at B’nai Israel, 300 58th St. N. The special guest speaker is Rabbi Steve Greenberg, the first openly gay Orthodox rabbi and founder of the Jerusalem Open House, the Holy City’s LGBTQ community center. A cocktail reception follows the service. Rabbi Greenberg speaks again at Cong. B’nai Israel at the Saturday morning service starting at 10 a.m. Lunch follows. St. Pete Pride Parade and Festival: The festival begins at 2 p.m. in North Straub Park with a variety of local vendors, food trucks, a DJ, beer garden and live entertainment stage. The Trans Pride March begins at 5 p.m. ahead of the big parade, which steps off at 6 and runs from Albert Whitted Park to Vinoy Park along Bayshore Drive. Free. 2-10 p.m. Saturday (June 24). Party Bus: The Cocktail bar will be running a free shuttle service from its location in the Grand Central District, dropping people off near the parade route and taking them back after the parade. Pride in Grand Central: St Pete Pride’s popular Sunday street fair brings tens of thousands of people to the Grand Central District for entertainment, vendors, food, interactive carnival games, street performers and hundreds of participating businesses and organizations. Free. Noon-5 p.m. Sunday (June 25). Grand Central District, St. Petersburg.

Cocked and Loaded Concert: Grammy winner Sheena Easton headlines a free concert on a stage in front of the Cocktail bar for the Sunday block party. It also features 1980s star Tiffany (“I Think We’re Alone Now”) and TikTok sensation and two-time “American Idol” contestant Tyler Ryan. Free. 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday (June 25). June 29-30

Queer-E-Okee: Carson Kressley from “Queer Eye” hosts a roster of local performers presenting some of the gay community’s favorite songs for an audience singalong.
