May 30, 2023 - Mariposa County was awarded a $6.3 million grant through the Economic Development Administration (EDA)/Department of Commerce for downtown renovations. To start this renovation project focused on improving infrastructure, contracted crews will update sewer lines in mid-June. This work will focus on 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and Bullion Streets to ensure Mariposa's commercial businesses and residents in the area have increased capacity and useful life.

"We understand this will impact parking and travel through the identified areas, but we do want to emphasize that the project's purpose is to make improvements that will support businesses and prevent future problems that may require more extensive work," shared Shannon Hansen, Public Works Director. Hansen noted that work like this was last done over 70 years ago, and upgrades are needed.

Work is expected to occur on weekdays from 7:00 am – 5:00 pm with no significant disruption to sewer lines in use. Traffic diversions and potential short-term closures will occur as part of this work. Impacts are expected on businesses and residents in the area, and Mariposa County recommends planning for an extra 5 – 10 minutes for trips to or through town during this time.

Mariposa County Public Works is overseeing the contracted work, and individuals from the contracted company, Public Works, Mariposa Public Utility District, Mariposa County Economic Development, and Mariposa County Public Information are working closely to keep the community updated on the project. For specific questions, individuals can contact Public Works at 1-209-966- 5356.

"The goal is to make these big changes so our downtown businesses can thrive. There may be short-term impacts as the work is being completed, but the long-term benefits will help businesses," assured Tara Schiff, Mariposa County Economic Development Specialist.
