WAPAKONETA, OH (WLIO) - Many people gathered in Wapakoneta Friday evening for a festival raising awareness about a rare neurological disorder in kids. Through balloon art, face painting, and outdoor food and activities, volunteers of The Apraxia Foundation promoted awareness about the disorder by hosting a festival at J.J. Catalina in Wapakoneta. Apraxia is a rare neurological disorder that causes difficulty speaking or moving due to brain damage or disease. Since apraxia is uncommon, The Apraxia Warriors in attendance strive to spread awareness on how we can help those with the disorder.

On Friday evening, local residents and visitors flocked to the banks of the Auglaize River in Wapakoneta to enjoy a summer concert at Heritage Park. Friday night's guests sang and danced to the band "Haywired" and enjoyed food from food trucks. Also, the Riverside Art Center was this week's host of the DORA beer tent and will receive all the proceeds made in beverage sales, a way the City of Wapakoneta supports local non-profits. With hundreds of people in attendance Friday night, the increased tourism provides beneficial impacts to the City of Wapakoneta.

The Otterbein SeniorLife community, including residents, staff, and their families, recently had a fun-filled day at a picnic event hosted by the facility. As part of their "Bold Adventures" program, attendees had the opportunity to participate in activities like an obstacle course, rock climbing, and fair-style rides. This annual event in early June is one way the senior living center ensures its residents are having an enjoyable time.

ELIDA, OH (WLIO) - The Elida FFA organized a blood donor day with the American Red Cross. The group was set up in the Elida High School gym. The five-hour blood drive gave donors plenty of time to roll up a sleeve and help put a dent in the nationwide blood shortage. All blood donors were given a complimentary Cedar Point pass as a token of gratitude.

WAPAKONETA, OH (WLIO) - Exotic animals were in Wapakoneta to teach kids about critters they may not see in their own backyards. Indiana WILD held a live animal show at the Auglaize County Library. Those who hosted the event hope that this gives kids and their families a new perspective seeing these types of animals up close and personal.

One Saturday a month, they have been holding a Walk with a Doc event at the Lima YMCA to promote physical activity. The program also gives people the chance to socialize with medical professionals as they talk about a different topic each month. The goal is not only to raise awareness but to improve the overall health of area residents.

Saturday is the fourth and final clean-up day for the program that has helped a lot of people get rid of some unwanted junk from their homes.

Trilogy Health Services' 11th annual bike ride made a stop at the Meadows of Delphos this morning. The residents gave the bikers a warm welcome with fun and creative signs to give them some motivation. Residents and healthcare staff heard from wellness speakers. The bikers then pedaled off to Findlay, Ottawa, and ended the day in Tiffin. The goal was to promote healthy living for the staff to bring even better care to the residents.

It was graduation day for the first summer academy of the Lima Noon Optimist Safety City classes. These kids have had an experience that they will never forget as they learn to protect themselves and their families. The week was full of safety drills about stranger abduction, home fires and emergencies, along with bike safety and a whole lot more. The classes made an impact on the participants and their parents.

ALLEN COUNTY, OH (WLIO) - An Eagle Scout project has turned one of Lima's water sources into a better recreation area. Evan Conley came up with the idea to put benches along Bresler Reservoir. They were placed at the one, two, and three-mile markers for runners and walkers to gauge their distance and take a break if they are exercising at the reservoir. Besides being a member of Troop 777, Conley is also on the Shawnee High School cross country team. So, with the help of members of his troop, the cross country team, and local businesses, he was able to get the project done. The Shawnee team practices around the reservoir, so Conley also wanted to pay tribute to his coach, Russ Holly, who passed away this past year.

WAPAKONETA, OH (WLIO) - Demolition has started on an Auglaize County property that has been a part of the area since the late 1800s. Crews were on the property of the former Koenig Building, taking down the building as well as cleaning the area. The project started thanks to a Brownfield Grant from the State of Ohio, where the county received nearly two and a half million dollars to clean up the site all the way down to the soil. The site could be home to a variety of businesses, but it is still too early to pinpoint what exactly will be filling the site located on Lima Street in Wapakoneta.

LIMA, OH (WLIO) - The Lima Police Department is looking into a shooting that landed one person in the hospital. Police were called out around 3:45 on Friday afternoon to 903 West Wayne Street. Detectives tell us 33-year-old James Evans of Lima was the victim and had serious injuries. He had been taken to Mercy Health - St. Rita's in a private car for treatment.

OTTAWA, OH (WLIO) - A nursing home resident in Ottawa is missing and a search is on to find her. The Ottawa Police Department reports that 42-year-old Billie J. Stearns was reported missing just before midnight from the Autumn Court Nursing Home. She was last seen Thursday night between 8:30 and 9 p.m. Law enforcement began a thorough search of the area and so far Stearns has not been found.

Lima police responded to a call of a pedestrian struck by a car at the intersection of Allentown Road and Cable Road just after 10:30 a.m. The man struck by the vehicle had to be transported from the scene with an apparent head injury. The extent of the injury is unknown at this time.

LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Another teenager connected to the death of Jaden Halpern back in June of 2022 has been sentenced. 19-year-old Keion Darden was sentenced to 23 to 28 years in prison. He previously accepted a plea deal where he pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter and aggravated robbery in exchange for the rest of the charges dropped. Darden, along with Khyrese Garner, Jaquan Glenn, Bryanna Houston, and two other underage teens, were charged when Lima police say the group tried to lure Halpern out of his Lane Avenue home. When they couldn't get him to come out, some of them allegedly forced their way into the house carrying air rifles. Halpern's dad saw the weapons and fired a shot, which hit his son in the process and killed him.
