DOYLESTOWN, PA—Doylestown’s American Legion Post 210 will hold a welcome home ceremony for Vietnam-era veterans later this month.

The ceremony, which will be held on March 29 at 2 p.m., will be for armed forces veterans who served during the Vietnam War, not just for veterans who served in country. The ceremony is also open to family members of those veterans.

“When we say ‘era,’ ” explained Peter Scott, Commander of the American Legion Post 210 in Doylestown, “it means you were in the military during that time. You don't necessarily have to have been in country.”

“Our Vietnam Veterans did not get the Welcome Home they deserved when they returned home the first time,” the Doylestown American Legion Post said in a statement. March 29 was designated as National Vietnam Veterans Day in 2017 to recognize the veterans of one of America’s most unpopular wars.

Scott, who is a Vietnam-era vet himself, said this month’s ceremony is a first for Doylestown. The American Legion Post is working with the Department of Defense, which is providing pins to honor veterans who attend the event.

“They're round pins about the size of a quarter to recognize people who served during the Vietnam era,” Scott said. “I also have pins for people who lost a family member in the war.”

Scott said that about 20 Vietnam-era veterans have so far expressed interest in the event, but he’s not sure how many will attend.

Scott said he would like to hear from mothers of Vietnam-era vets who died in service. He acknowledged that Gold Star mothers of Vietnam veterans would be very old at this point.

“If there are any left,” Scott said, “we would want to plan a special recognition for them.”

For more information or to register for the ceremony, contact the Doylestown American Legion Post at chaplain@doylestownPost210.org or call 215-249-3034.
