The Denver City Council will consider again Monday extending the mayor’s emergency declaration over homelessness. In reality, Denver is facing two emergencies – the matter of the unhoused population that’s already here, and the issue of migrants from south of the border that have come flowing into the city. From December 2022 to August 2023, the Denver mayor declared an emergency around the migrant influx. The situation with the migrants is even more urgent now. Migrants who have timed out of the city’s shelter system are living on the streets in tents. Many are families with young children and pregnant mothers.
