Just about every culture has some kind of historical connection to meats prepared and then wrapped in bread. Cooking the meat, then covering it in an edible dough both protected the meat and helped it last longer, which was important in an age without refrigeration and when individuals were traveling for weeks (or months) and fresh food wasn’t readily available. Historically, this method of transporting meat originated in the Middle East, before spreading through Europe. The empanada was birthed in Spain (then passed to the Americas, where most countries make a different variation of the food), and in England, it became known as a pasty. Now, a popular restaurant in metro Phoenix has plans on making its own expansion in the Valley.

Luck, whether owners want to admit it or not, plays a part in the eventual success or failure of a restaurant. This is especially the case when first starting out. A new restaurant can have excellent food, a prime location, and even quality marketing, but if luck isn’t on its side, the business will not survive. Sadly, that seems to be what has happened with one local restaurant, which officially closed up shop last week. While fans and patrons are holding out hope the business does return, as of today, the Phoenix establishment is no more after less than a year after opening (although it has left the door open for a possible return).

The former police officer convicted of the murder of George Floyd, has been incarcerated at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tuscon, Ariz. The FCI is a medium-security prison recently plagued with staff shortages and security lapses. In January, the prison was placed on lockdown just months after an attempted shooting inside the facility.
