School Board Chair Tina Certain tells CBS4 News she called the meeting to hear feedback from parents and families. The discussion comes after the school district announced spot rezoning of four local elementary schools. The list includes: Chiles, Hidden Oak, and Meadowbrook. The district says they want to utilize additional space in Terwilliger Elementary, all proposed changes are due to overcrowding.

"Tonight, I came here thinking I would get the justification...the reasoning to why those four schools were chosen," board member Kay Abbitt said. Some ACPS board members and concerned parents say they want facts and figures regarding the districts recent announcement. "We weren't given any information about what students would be affected except for the four mentioned elementary schools," Jenn Garrett said. Her child attends a school currently proposed to be rezoned, she questions the timing."A big part of the problem with what's going on right now is not just that we might be rezoned. It's March, we're in mid-March as many parents stated kindergarten round up is in the middle of April," Garrett said. Certain says spot rezoning is where a few schools are reviewed in a smaller area. She says after this process, the district is planning to perform a comprehensive rezoning which involves the entire district. The district says the last comprehensive rezoning was performed in the 1980's."We have to do this and it has been 40 years, 1983... I'm hoping for good feedback and input and engagement with the community," Certain said. Some parents expressed concerns about accessibility and transportation regarding rezoning."The goal is to utilize assets more efficiently... school buildings, transportation costs, things of that nature," Certain said.

She says tentatively the goal to complete spot rezoning of elementary schools is before this school year ends in May. ACPS board member Sarah Rockwell suggested a memo with facts and figures be sent out before the next rezoning workshop on March 23th at 5:30pm at Terwilliger Elementary.
