RED BANK, NJ: Welcome to a Presidents' Day edition of the Red Bank Beat! For many of us it is a three-day weekend (yay) so I hope some of you have some exciting plans. I wish I could say that this balmy weather will hold up throughout the weekend, but it looks like we’ll be back into the 40’s by Saturday. Hey, at least there’s no snow in the forecast!

I also want to thank the 300+ people and all 27 businesses who participated with us in last week’s Sweet Stroll for Valentine’s Day.

It was a huge success, and you can certainly expect it to come back next year!  We acknowledge that a few of the businesses may not have been open for some customers if they picked up their tote bags on the earlier side, so next year we’ll start it a bit later to avoid that situation.

In any event, everyone had a blast and so did we! Now on to some new stuff!

COMING TO THE MOLLY IN MARCH -THE MONMOUTH WINE AND FOOD EXPERIENCE!

The Monmouth Wine and Food Experience is an exciting, brand-new event taking place at the Molly Pitcher Inn on Thursday, March 30 from 6-9 p.m!

You’ll get to taste food from dozens of local restaurants and caterers, sample fine wines and spirits (hence the name), and check out some hands-on food demos. You’ll even go home with a cool swag bag!

The Monmouth Wine & Food Experience is being presented by Monmouth Health & Life magazine, and ticket sales will benefit local non-profits including the Coastal Communities Family Success Center and Red Bank’s very own JBJ Soul Kitchen. I anticipate a whole bunch of our great Red Bank restaurants participating, and a guaranteed good time will be had by all!

You can purchase your tickets here and if you purchase those tickets by March 1 you’ll get $10 off! You know you want to go, right, so why wait until the last minute to get those tix? Buy ‘em now and save some money!

INTRODUCING TRACY HAGGER AND TATUM GALLERY

For 35 years, Carol Lynn and Don Chetkin, longtime area residents, owned the Chetkin Gallery at 9 Wharf Avenue, offering the locals and visitors alike the finest in European art.

Last year, the Chetkins decided to retire from the art business permanently but they were hoping that the gallery would remain in downtown Red Bank.

Enter Tracy Hagger, a lover of international art, to save the day! Tracy, who moved with her family to the area 8 years ago from London, decided to purchase the gallery and rename it the Tatum Gallery. And what a gallery it is!

Tracy has artwork from over 40 artists, with all of them being international artists! The gallery has artwork from Western European countries such as France, the UK, and Italy, as well as such far-away places as Russia, China and South Korea! The Tatum’s artwork tends to be more traditional than modern, but regardless of your taste the gallery definitely has some universally beautiful pieces.

In addition to the art that’s available for purchase, Tatum also does custom framing by Rochelle Cauvin (pictured on the right next to Tracy).

During the winter they’re open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 AM – 5 PM and evenings by appointment. Next time you’re looking for some new art for your walls check them out!

BLACK HISTORY MONTH CONTINUES

As you know, February is Black History Month, and Red Bank likes to celebrate Black History Month with lots of events!  Here are just some of them coming up over the rest of the month:

🔴 MAYSA LEAK AT THE VOGEL - FEBRUARY 25 AT 8PM

Jazz-soul singer/songwriter Maysa Leak may best be known for her vocal work with British jazz band Incognito, with such great songs as a cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing” which was a huge hit in Europe. However, her solo work is just as prolific, with more than 13 solo albums and countless accolades to her name. Her jazz-influenced brand of R&B music has won acclaim the world over, and she’s coming right here to the Vogel at the Count Basie Center for the Arts. You can get tix to this great show starting at $25 right here.

🔴 FREE FILM SERIES AT BASIE CENTER CINEMAS

The Basie is just chock-full of great events to commemorate Black History Month. Two family-friendly movies are coming: The Wiz with Diana Ross and Michael Jackson on Sunday, February 19 at 1:45 PM and The Green Book, which won an Oscar for best film of the year, on Sunday, February 26 at 4:30 PM.  Also, Dear White People, a film with more adult themes, is playing on Sunday, February 19th at 4:30 PM.

All of these films are playing at the Basie Center Cinemas at 36 White Street. The popcorn isn’t free but the movies are!

🔴 FASHION SHOW AT THE T. THOMAS FORTUNE CULTURAL CENTER

On February 25th from 3- 5 PM, the T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center in Red Bank is having a fashion show!

The vibrant colors of Africa will come alive in patterns, prints, and styles that are fun to have in your closet at Fashions by Rashidah. Tickets are only $20, and you can purchase yours right here.

That’s it for this week’s Beat. I hope all of you enjoy a wonderful holiday weekend and get to do something fun. And don’t forget to shop local! See you next week.
