Warriors pillage Vikings in Iowa District 4 playoff action

ARMSTRONG — The North Union Warriors built a commanding 49-28 lead by halftime and never looked back en route to pillaging the Northwood-Kensett Vikings, 83-46, during Iowa Class 1A, District 4 boys basketball playoff action Monday night in Armstrong.

North Union (14-8) advances to face West Fork (17-4) at 7 p.m. Thursday night at West Fork High School in Sheffield, Iowa. West Fork eliminated St. Edmond by a 58-45 postseason decision on Monday night to reach the next round.

Logan Odegaard scorched his hometown nylon cords on 7-for-14 field-goal shooting to produce a game-best 20 points to top the Warriors’ winning ways. Odegaard also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.

Kody Irmiter also blistered the nets by sinking 6 of 7 shots from 2-point range to pace his 13-point performance for North Union, while teammate Aiden Lofstrom made 7 of 8 free throws to ignite his 13-point effort.

Kyan Jones tossed in nine points, distributed seven assists and pocketed a game-high five steals for the Warriors, while Teagon Fothergill chipped in nine points.

Danyal Fothergill rounded out North Union’s winning performance by scoring seven points, pulling down six rebounds, doling out a game-best eight assists and garnering three steals.

The Warriors made 31 of 58 field goals overall for 53.4 percent, including 25 of 40 from 2-point range for 62.5 percent. North Union also sizzled at the free throw line by tossing in 15 of 18 for 83.3 percent.

Colby Eskildsen scored 14 points to top the Vikings, Carter Anderson netted 13 points, while Kooper Julseth chipped in nine points.

Northwood-Kensett ended its season with an 8-14 record.

Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 69, Glenville-Emmons 42 — The Jaguars utilized a balanced offensive attack to cage the Wolverines by 27 points during nonconference action Monday night in Northrop.

Jakob Fischer produced 14 points, grabbed seven rebounds and pocketed five steals to spearhead the Jaguars’ winning ways, while teammate Carter Fox generated 14 points and dished out three assists.

Jackson Madsen netted 11 points for Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther, while Kayden Loeschen collected eight points, six assists and four boards.

Peyton Franzen tossed in seven points for the Jaguars, who built a 31-25 halftime advantage before outscoring the Wolverines 38-17 during the final 18 minutes of regulation.

The Jaguars (12-9) travel to Sherburn tonight to face Martin County West in a Valley Conference game.

Girls Basketball

St. James Area 83, Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 52 — Taylor Sodeman netted a game-best 21 points to power the Saints to a 31-point non-league win over the Jaguars on Monday night in St. James.

Madelyn Malmgren and Jacey Swanson supplied 15 points apiece to St. James’ winning performance.

Olivia Mattson neared double-double territory by scoring 13 points to complement grabbing eight rebounds to top the Jaguars. Mattson also pocketed three steals.

Keira Benck collected 10 points and three assists for the Jaguars, Brianna Petrowiak scored nine points, McKenna Benck supplied eight points and six caroms, while Bethany Petrowiak added six points and four rebounds.

The Jaguars (13-9) travel to Blue Earth Area on Thursday night, while St. James Area (13-10) plays host to Fairmont tonight.
