NEWBURGH, NY – Once again, the Adirondack United left no doubt about it.

The United advanced to the New York State girls’ hockey semifinals with an 11-0 victory over Section 1’s East Green Wave in their regional contest on Monday evening.

“There’s a lot of energy in there, especially coming off a big win like this,” said sophomore Jenna Amodio, one of the United’s six players from Saratoga. “All of us are really focused on keeping this going and hopefully winning the state title.”

The United were led on Monday by two players from Queensbury, junior Bayley Duffy and freshman Gianna Marcantonio, who each earned a hat trick.

For Duffy, her three goals brought her season total to 32, while Marcantonio has scored 17 so far.

“Gianna’s a kid who works hard all the time,” said Adirondack coach Jeff Willis. “She’s got a really high ceiling and we were just waiting for her to learn how to play with Lillian (Willis) and Bayley, who are two difficult players to learn how to play with; they’re very creative and sometimes it’s hard to support them. Gianna’s young, so leaning how to play off their skill sets can be challenging.”

Duffy got the scoring started just over two minutes into the game, scoring the lone goal of the first period on an assist from Marcantonio. The United then erupted for six goals in the second period.

All of Marcantonio’s three goals came in the second, with Emily Macaulay and Duffy (2) joining in on the fun.

“Sometimes that’s how we roll,” Amodio said of the big second period. “There are some games we come out with a ton of energy. Then there’s others where it takes us a little bit to get going. We had a lot more energy in the second and third and we were able to get a lot of pucks on the net.”

The United tacked on four more goals in the third period, from four separate players: Tekla Fine-Lease, Amelia Laszewski, Lillian Willis and Aubrey Lozier.

In addition to her three goals, Duffy also earned the playmaker tag, as the Queensbury junior tallied three assists. Amodio compiled three assists as well, while Tekla Fine-Lease added on a pair of assists.

“Early on we played them to 3-0 and 6-1 wins, but we were still figuring things out,” Willis said of the United’s previous games against the East Green Wave, on December 28 and 29. “Today what you saw is us having figured it out and it all came together at once.”

Since beginning their playoff run, the United won their Section 7 semifinal game against Saranac-Lake Placid by a score of 10-0. Then they defeated Franklin Academy 5-1 to win the sectional title in their inaugural season. Monday’s 11-0 regional win over the East Green Wave, based out of Scarsdale, gives the Adirondack a 26-1 goal differential in their three postseason games.

“Even if we’re up by a lot, you don’t want to give them any momentum, so it’s always great to see that zero up there,” said Queensbury sophomore Madison Macaulay on getting the shutout.

“That’s the great part about these games, that everyone gets to be out there and show what they’ve been working on,” Macaulay added on the United’s big wins. “Our freshman and sophomores have been busting their tails every practice and game, to show they deserve to be out there and get ice time.”

The state semifinals will be held on Friday, February 17 at the Nexus Center in Utica. The United will take on Canton (Section 10) at 6 p.m., as they look to advance to the state final. Adirondack defeated Canton 7-1 on February 3.

The other NYS semifinal game will be between Clinton (Section 3/ tournament host) and Kenmore/ Grand Island (Section 6) at the Nexus Center at 8 p.m.

On January 2, the United dropped their only game of the season to Clinton, 3-2. On January 20, the United visited Clinton at the Nexus Center and won, 5-0. They have not faced Kenmore/ Grand Island.

“They’re definitely showing the signs of a team that has great things at the end of the road for them,” Willis said.
