NEWINGTON – The Nighthawks girls hockey team (14-2) jumped out to an early lead on Wednesday night over the New Canaan Rams (14-3). However, a pair of power play goals from the Rams sunk their hosts and handed them their second loss of the season.
Nighthawks’ center Nicole Partridge drew first blood in the sixth minute with help from Emily Schneider and Bella Bonfiglio.
The Rams were able to capitalize on two mistakes in the final three minutes of the opening period to take back the lead. Just six seconds into New Canaan’s first power play of the night it was Piper Chaisson who snuck one through for the equalizer.
New Canaan earned another power play chance about two minutes later and once again took advantage of the opportunity 18 seconds into the Nighthawks’ penalty kill. Amanda Benson was credited with what ended up being the game-winner for the Rams.
The Nighthawks pulled their goalie with one minute to play in the third period but could not force the game into overtime and watched the Rams skate off as victors.
Despite the loss, the Nighthawks are still outscoring opponents 65-23 and have only allowed more than two goals once this season.
With four games to go in the regular season, the next will come on Friday night from the Newington Ice Arena where the East Catholic co-op will be the home team for an 8:50 p.m. puck drop.
The following night they’ll make the trip out to Darien in search of revenge from a 7-1 loss they suffered less than a month ago.
