FAIRMONT, W.Va. (WV News) – The Robert C. Byrd Flying Eagles applied the clamps on defense, holding the Fairmont Senior Polar Bears to 13 points on four field goals in the final three quarters to earn a 40-26 victory at the Field House on Wednesday night.
“It was a slow start, but I thought they picked it up and were in the right positions,” RCB coach Robert Shields said.
Avery Childers was excellent for RCB with 24 points and nine rebounds, while Carleigh Curotz scored six with eight boards and Jaden Sturm and Martina Howe added five points each, with Howe passing out five assists.
“Obviously the girls looked for Avery tonight inside. There were opportunities because we were spaced well and got them in a disadvantage with our movement,” Shields said. “I thought we passed the ball and shared it well.”
Sadaya Jones scored 18 for Fairmont Senior with nine rebounds and four steals, while Charlee Beresford scored six with five steals and Joclyn Silva added a basket.
Fairmont Senior started well: After allowing a 3 to Howe, the Polar Bears scored the next 10 points, seven from Jones, to go up seven with 3:11 left in the first quarter.
“I think their game plan was good at the beginning,” Shields said.
RCB battled back within three at 11-8 on an Childers stick-back but Beresford’s putback at the buzzer gave Fairmont Senior a five-point edge.
Down 15-11 following a Jones lay-in, RCB launched a 8-0 run with two Childers baskets book-ending layups by Curotz and Howe.
The Eagles led, 19-15, at the 4:38 mark of the second quarter.
Sturm’s 3 pushed the cushion to six, 24-18, at halftime.
The Eagles then shut out the Polar Bears for the first 5:57 of the third quarter, building a 32-18 lead as Childers scored six of RCB’s eight points.
“I think we slowed them down a lot. We forced them to run a lot of time off the clock,” Shields said.
It was a 34-22 game after three quarters.
Fairmont Senior got within 10 on Jones’ opening jumper in the fourth quarter, but no closer.
Fairmont Senior (5-13) visits Keyser on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Robert C. Byrd (15-4) has won its last eight entering a home date with Liberty on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
“The defense is what I’m most proud of and that’s what we’ve been working on during this whole stretch,” Shields said.
