Cleveland PD uses Public Comment Portal to connect with Residents

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — The Cleveland Police Department released a statement detailing a new method to engage with the community through an online comment portal.

Cleveland PD has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies since 2009. They are in the 4% of police departments nationwide that has earned accreditation honors.

Recently, CALEA made a change to their rules, and are now requiring accredited agencies to maintain a public comment portal.

These web-based portals will allow members of the community to pose policy-based questions or grievances about police procedures and receive personal feedback.

Lieutenant Daniel Gibbs of the Cleveland PD is eager to build upon relations with the community as they also maintain accreditation.

“A department is only as good as it’s policy, their policy is only as good as their training on the policy. So when that all comes together and the community is involved, it benefits everybody,” Lieutenant Gibbs said.

The portal opened Tuesday, February 7th. You can find it on the City of Cleveland website under the police department tab.

Cleveland PD welcomes all resdients to share and comment, but they want to emphasize that the CALEA public comment portal is not to be used for tips, investigation requests or any comments not based on a policy.
